Finds: the Sunlight Foundation and government data

The Sunlight Foundation is dedicated to making political and government information visible. It has a number of links to these types of data sets as well as its own API. Their LOUIS data set is particularly interesting, including the Congressional Record, Reports and Hearings, as well as bills and resolutions, GAO Reports, the Federal Register and executive orders and proclamations. Best of all, LOUIS has an API.

They've produced an interesting series of visualizations of earmarks using IBM and Martin Wattenberg's ManyEyes, and have other visualizations in development. An interesting widget shows words from a recent day in congress. A related site is MapLight, which focuses on bills, laws, and their relationship to money.

Best,

Ben.
