Finds: a new sort of reading?

Hey everyone,

There's interesting discussion in the NY Times lately about whether online media are harming readers, or instead creating a new kind of reading, and matching readers.

I'm inclined toward the latter, and would argue that we have been doing this sort of reading for a long time: in skimming a single book, scanning articles, looking a collections of clippings, at posters. All of these have a lot of similarities to following links on the web. It's just much more widespread now than it used to be.

So this raises the question: what is the right sort of design to support this sort of reading?
