Find: Perception online

Sekuler and Blake wrote a classic introductory textbook on perception. Their companion website has many valuable links to online resources, including nice introductions to Fourier analysis.

Best,

Ben.

Find: g-speak - hand interface to table/wall display

Hey folks,

This from our student Alejandro.

Tho the Minority Report stuff looks very cool, I've always be skeptical of this "hand jivey" thing. There's a lot of handy constraints in a 2D surface, so my attitude is, if it's 2D, why then interact with it in 2D. There are good reasons for the widespread use of the mouse.

There's a better case to me made for 3D interaction with 3D objects, but again, it's still missing the "push back" we get from the real world. What we have here is the "traffic cop metaphor"; it may be 3D but it's an indirection that still requires learning of a gestural language.

Best,

Ben.

Meet: Healey & Enns on texture and color in viz

Hey folks,

We met yesterday and spoke about the following paper:

Healey, C. G. and Enns, J. T. "Large Datasets at a Glance: Combining Textures and Colors in Scientific Visualization." IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics 5, 2, (1999), 145-167.

The paper deals with a number of basic issues that have come up in our own work, including that by students Eric Price, Alex Kuhl, Ju Hee Bae and Matt Rakow.

Best,

Ben.

All,

I am teaching the ID400/500 3D Game Development Studio in Prague in the Czech Republic in the Summer of 2009. Unlike most ID studios this one is open to the university and is a good opportunity for students outside of design to get an introduction to the methods and practices of asset design for 3D games. It is also a fantastic opportunity to study at the Prague Institute.

There will be an informational session on Oct. 29 at 12:00 in Burns Auditorium in Kamphoefner Hall.

You can also contact Dana Bartelt, the director of the Prague Institute

Meet: vector graphics on GPUs

Hey folks,

This week we read about a paper on vector graphics on the GPU:

D. Nehab, H. Hoppe. Random-access rendering of general vector graphics. ACM Transactions on Graphics (SIGGRAPH Asia), 2008.

Best,

Ben.
